Although popular in the valleys of Switzerland, the Bernese Mountain Dog had been for some time eclipsed by the St. Bernard. Todya, however, the breed is coming back into favor in their old role as companion to the herds, and as a loyal and honest watchdog.

The ancient Romans used the Bernese as a fighting dog, equipped with a hard leather collar encrusted with large large iron studs. A little hot temperment still remains frm this period, and the peace of the herd need only be disturbed for it to be unleashed. Even with the cows they watch, they are not particularly gentle.

>n germany, the Bernese Mountain Dog has been used successfully as a police as well as a rescue dog. His powerfully build body shows that this is a born working dog.
